It's no surprise to me that you liked the STI Escort. Both of my carry weapons are from STI. The VIP (double stack) and the Guardian (single stack) I have been very pleased with all four of my STI pistols. All are very smooth and accurate. If you don't go with STI, my next choice would be the Sig. I'm not a Glock fan (good gun, just not fot me) and I've owned a Walther and much prefer STI.

Since you started the thread with your desire for an XDM thought I would chime in. The grip of the M would be a chore to conceal; try shooting an XD9sc (or a 40sc). Someone mentioned the 10 rd mag on the 9sc but there are factory 13 rds available for the 9sc in the same size. The 9 rd mag for the 40sc will carry 13 rds of 9mm as well. Been using 4 of them for quite a while with no issues. Kinda nice to have a "small" gun with 14 rds ready to go. Lots of good weapons listed already. Try to shoot as many as possible and then you can make an informed decision.

i noticed no one has recommended a revolver
my ccl instructor says that for the novice, a revolver would be the best choice.
no safeties to operate/forget and goes bang everytime the trigger is pulled.

Revolvers are great too. I would highly recommend a S&W Airweight to anyone looking for a carry gun that's a revolver. They are light as heck, good quality, and pretty small so not tough to carry.

No safeties on a Glock either. : )

Just messing with ya. Nothing wrong with revolvers.

This picture still shows the Crimson Trace that has a longer grip. I've change it to a smaller grip since.

I pocket carry this gun during the hot seasons in Texas. I highly suggest though that you should take your CHL and qualify with a Semi-Auto (Category SA). That way it puts you in a category and licensed to operate/carry an SA=Semi Auto or NSA=Non Semi Auto guns. If you do qualify with a Revolver (NSA) you will not be able to carry a Semi Auto at all.

Just my suggestion and good luck.

Thanks for the input thus far guys. FYI I'm not considering a revolver (maybe down the road).

I haven't got to try any other guns yet but since I have Friday off I plan on changing that. I'm already thinking I'm going to want at least two guns (not surprised). A nice 1911 for carry/SD and another one that is a double stack for fun and maybe as a carry down the road. I'm hoping to shoot the G19 and either a Kimber or Sig.

I was wondering if it was me or if others agree, a nice 1911 feels like warm butter in your hands

One important factor to remember ( for me, anyway,) is weight. The weight of the firearm for all-day carry should be considered. I met a young man last week that carries the Kimber .45 w/ 3" barrel with no problems. And the pistol felt great in my large hand. I normally carry the XD45compact, but it's lots of weight. I'll probably go back to my XD9SC this summer. It's about 1/2 a pound lighter.

    Good luck!

As others have said, you will likely end up with several guns in different sizes. G19 or G23 for winter carry when wearing a coat. G26 or G27 when wearing a cover garment like a light jacket or vest. Kahr PM9 or S&W J frame revolver for summer pocket carry.

i plan on carring a glock 19. from a co-worker who has been crring for about 10 years says the glock 19 is big to carry. but he is much smaller than me. i'm 6'2" / 230 lbs with a pretty muscular frame. so i guess my question is a glock to big to conceal?

No. The G19 is often a preferred carry gun. You should have no problems concealing it with a good quality belt and holster setup (IWB usually works best). I am 5'11"/240lbs or so and can easily conceal a double stacked .45 1911. I had no issues whatsoever concealing the G19 when I had mine other than sometimes forgetting I still had it on. The key here, and you may mention it to your co-worker if he hasn't invested in one, is the good quality belt/holster along with properly sized concealment garments. Hope this helps you and maybe even the OP if any of this hasn't been said already (I'm lazy and didn't read the thread, hopefully JKTex won't catch me ).

I agree with TxGolfer45. When I am off duty I carry a Kahr PM9 during the summer months. During winter if you want to call it that in Texas I carry a Glock 26 or 27. IMO the Glock 26 is one of the easiest guns to shoot and for me very accurate in where my shot placements are. What are you looking to spend? I paid $452.00 for the Glock 26/27 w/NS and $600.00 for the Kahr PM9 w/NS and by the way those are LEO prices.

It always is. That is how most of us end up with the "magical box o' holsters" laying around.

Now if ya'll just have a garage sale, us newbies can take that magical box off your hands...until we decide which we like...lol
