    Hypothetical:
If someone gained possession of a gun that didn't have any serial numbers or defining markings (brand, caliber/gauge etc.) could they put their own serial number on it and register it? Not a homemade or 80% gun. I'm talking, brand made but someone filed off all the markings.

I've been thinking in the 10 minutes since I posted this....it wouldn't make sense for it to be legal. People would be stealing guns and re-numbering them and suddenly its there's free and clear? Lol

The hypothetical gun is an old Stevens 107b
The Stevens No. 107 (in all of its incarnations) was manufactured from 1912 through 1945. Approximately 442,500 were made during this time.

They would likely NOT have any serial# on them. it was not required at the time.

I also verified that model did NOT get serial#s issued by Stevens- they were a "value model", and mass produced without them.

So what does that mean for the gun? How would it affect NFA possibilities?

I've got two firearms w/o serial numbers - they'll stay that way. Both are low value & both are old - just like me.
And I sleep well (except for when I forget to take my NSAID).

It can be, but should it? I think is a better question. Just the stamp alone would be more than the gun is worth.

I know very little about NFA so forgive me but there's no loopholes or technicalities around having to get a stamp, since the gun is un-numbered and so old?

    Helotes!
Wait, does the firearm in question have the serial number filed off or did it just not have one in the first place (i.e. was build before 1968)? There is a world of difference between those two situations, the latter being no issue whereas the former being a big one...
