The UK's tax collection agency is putting forth a proposal that all employers send employee paychecks to the government, after which the government would deduct what it deems as the appropriate tax and pay the employees by bank transfer.

It's effectively no different from what the government, there or here, does now. Look on your paycheck - they took their cut before you got it. This UK plan just makes it a lot more obvious what they're doing.

No, it is different. You have a little control over your paycheck -- not much, but a little. You can decide how much or how little to withhold. In the UK, the Big Brother gets first shot at it and tells you how much you can keep. We'll be there soon if we don't change our ways.
