    What's the storage difference?

Probably not much when stacked a couple cans high and when I never need to move them. But when I need to move cans around with 60 pounds of ammo inside... I'll trust the steel cans and not the plastic ones... and stacking plastic cans several high when full of heavy ammo... fuggettabout it!!

Anyway, what's the point of plastic when the steel ones are cheap enough and so much stronger? If storing lightweight stuff the plastic are preferable... but storing and stacking very heavy stuff like ammo... plastic... really?

They won't stack with a thousand rounds in them huh

A thousand rounds of what? It doesn't matter. If they're filled to the top with ammo they'll be very very heavy. It's not that plastics can't be extremely strong... it's that the cans offered to us cannot hold up to being full of ammo and moved around and/or stacked several high. They just can't... not like mil-surp steel cans... or even the cheap Chinese knock-off steel cans, for that matter.

Compared to the brass and lead in the ammo filling the can... the weight of steel vs. plastic cans is a moot point. However, strength and longevity issues do matter. Don't buy plastic if storing ammo. ;)

If you're storing lightweight items then your needs may differ.
Storing mags not loaded or components that is in the cans
