We just had a Samsung fridge go out. We've had it just over five years. It had to be replaced in the first month due to a leak in the coils. At the two year mark the ice maker crapped out.

The LG in the garage just keeps ticking. I replaced the Samsung with a LG.

    “price point engineering”
Is that defined as "build it as cheap as can be done and make sure it doesn't last"?

Factor in cheapest labor, materials and marketing possible, lock in a healthy margin for upper management, add 25% just for shits in case the price of said management's swimming pools chemicals increase or politician's need to be bought, then wow the suckers with false advertising and pretty pictures.

Good old 21st century American greed, by quarterly numbers ... works for hamburgers as well.

Our LG washer just crapped out. Bought new in 2012. Just me and the wife so not much use either. Grrrr.

    Get a SpeedQueen.

All mechanical. No bs circuit boards or fancy lights. Will wash a fully grown buffalo in 40 minutes without banging around from balance issues.

Also designed so water restrictions can be easily bypassed.

Also depends on the definition of "crapped out".

I have replaced a leaking water valve and rebuilt the ice maker on my LG built Kenmore Elite refer. It was trouble free until after the three year extended warranty expired.

My LG washer and dryer combo does about 25 loads a week. Dryer has zero issues ever. I've had to replace the water manifold once and the circuit/relay main board twice. It costs $150 each time. Then again, it's washed about 7500 loads.

It's hard to precisely engineer obsolescence when the warranty duration is variable. I cannot afford to buy a new $3300 refer or a $2000 washer and dryer pair every 6-8 years so I fix them.

If you can read and follow logical progression, you can fix most things around the house. You should see how I fixed my upper oven controls...

Glad the fridge is working again OP!

    My approach:
    1. Buy a floor model fridge at Home Depot, usually they are 30-50% off MSRP
    2. When it fails, buy another one (every 6 years or so)

    My MIL:
    1. Buy the most expensive fridge on the market
    2. Pay for the extended warranty
    3. Fridge breaks down every 6 months. Call the warranty guys. Pay a service fee each time. Lose contents of fridge each time, costing hundreds in lost food.

    Me too and, thanks!

I normally try to buy floor models to save $$ because I don't give a rats about a scratch or dent yet, they treat them like gold in the Huntsville area for some reason.

I've had the best results on new appliances buying the cheapest ones. They aren't built well, but they are built simply.

The expensive ones also aren't built well, but they are more complicated and fail quicker.

Did exactly that when buying new appliances for the lake house the past few years. Replaced dishwasher, fridge, washer and dryer. Plain vanilla, no bells and whistles.
