Here is the burning question: How many folks from California have immigrated to socialist countries (Venezuela, China, etc), countries with the amenities they feel the U.S. requires - high speed rail, better public transit, etc, or countries with the social programs that they rave about?

The last quote in the story holds the answer. It's them.
"Things were just becoming too much back home, but I didn’t want to leave everything about L.A. behind," California expat Jamie Dixon explained. "With Portugal," Dixon added, "we could keep the parts we liked and leave the rest."

    Charlie,

Puh-leez, all us Fr. Ord folk NEVER call it 'Boot Camp' - that's for Navy and Marines's...and the Coast Guard.

For us'n, it was Basic Training (or just plain ole 'basic') and thereafter for some of us (me) it was then time for Advanced Infantry Training (or jus plain old AIT)...but 'Boo-oot' camp, never...

I was there in 68...absolutely gorgeous land and sea, but the locals...ppptttt, except for Clint Eastwood and I have my doubts about him...Mayor of Carmel, puh-leeze...OK, Carmel is freaking beautiful...

I went to "basic" and AIT there at Ft. Ord. in '66 and agree about it being gorgeous. Weather was great (summertime) also. I pulled "guard duty" one afternoon on an overpass above Hwy 1 while I was in AIT. It sure beat the hell out of going to training in the hot of Texas or Louisiana in the middle of summer!

Yeah, and Forts, as in Ft. Ord, Ft. Campell, Ft. Benning, et al (Army-speak) are now even referred to as 'bases'...sigh, but we didn't have women in Basic or AIT, so maybe it woulda been funnner if we did...or not.

Guys, for the most part generally all got along, though sure there might be some minor grumbling/complaining, but we didn't have screaming matches or hair pulling or PMS crankiness or blues to deal with...

    Charlie,

Boy, ain't that the truth, but I understand women can have long, well relatively long in comparison to their male counterparts...but, now that I've digested the idea of training for war with women...nah, the 'urge to merge' would've gotten me in trouble - good thing there were no women in my training days.

California, the Sodom and Gomorrah of the modern world. Even after 20+ years away from it I still feel tainted from being there. Anyone know someone that can perform a full CA exorcism on me? I need to feel as much Texan as I can!
Spend at least 16 hours smoking a brisket, drink some Lone Star, be nice and take your neighbor some of that brisket, wave to any stranger you see on the way, help they other guy out of a ditch, go home and kiss the wife. Should get you headed in the right direction.

If you think you had it rough at Fort Ord, you should have been across the bay at Monterey - the language school DLI/FLC. The second time I went '84-'85, they thought they were hard core because they had gone doing PT five days a week.

Although the first time, '80-'81, my class section consisted of 9 females and two males. It was interesting to say the least.

I never understood the stupidity of moving somewhere to get away and then wanting to recreate what you fled from. 50 years ago, immigrants everywhere assimilated, now, they all crap on the natives that have lived there fir generations. Pisses me off because this generation thinks all that came before them were stupid and their rights were God given because they are so special, not earned by the blood and sweat of their fathers
