Any place in San Antonio that carries surplus rifles? Trying to keep the cost down as much as I can but prices seem to be crazy.

I'm looking for something in 8mm. Leaning towards a Yugo Mauser or if anyone is looking to sell/trade. Let me know.

Looking for a shooter, don't care too much if it's ugly and beat up as long as it shoots straight =)

    Thanks

Most gun shops that I've been to have surplus. Not sure if they have a Yugo Mauser or not though. I bought mine from one of the gun shows that frequent the area.

    San Antonio!
The Powder Horn used to carry milsurps, but if you're looking for a decent deal find a private seller or hit a gun show. Don't expect any deals at shops or stores...

Try calling Mark Chernushin. Old rifles are his specialty.

I heard Mark was considering opening up a storefronts, anh idea if that's gonna happen?!? He's always at the local gun shows and has parted me with a lot of my money but he always (eventually) gives me a great deal on firearms...

I would recommend checking out the listings on Gunbroker. I had good luck going to gun shops in the past, but others here suggest it's not a fruitful experience.

There are usually plenty of Yugo Mausers on GB. Good luck!

It's been about a year and a half since I've talked to him. He seemed pretty content to operate out of his house. After talking to him a few times I get the impression he'd rather do that than deal with San Antonio regulatory BS. But who knows?

We see Mark at every show (both SAXET and Premier) and we've talked about this in the past; but I can't remember what the latest news on his shop was.

If we go to SAXET next month I'll ask him.

The only milsurp I have ever bought in SA was a 1939 Steyr Mauser 98K in 8mm IS. It cost about $450 in '08. It never saw "front line" service, hence its mint condition, including matching serial numbers on all major and minor parts.

It shoots one inch groups at 100 yards with hand loaded ammo (Remington 8mm Bullets). Surplus, corrosive ammo does about 2 1/2 inches at the same distance. (I keep a bottle of Windex handy when shooting surplus ammo).

Elevation is easy to adjust for with the rear sight, but windage has to be accomplished by drifting the front sight with a brass rod and mallet.

Thanks again for the insight and pointers.

I found a pair of Mosin rifles for a fair (not great but fair) price. Basically paying retail price without paying the taxes. As long as head space checks out they're both mine.

Separately, I also got a pretty good deal on some surplus ammo with no shipping costs so I'll be set for a while at the range.

Anyone know of a company that makes a non-Monte Carlo stock for a Mosin? I shoot lefty and it seems all the stocks are right handed Monte Carlos.
