I'll preface this by saying roasting your own beans is not for everyone, in the way that home brewing or hand loading is not.

It is quite economical unlike buying a boat to feed my family with $1,000-each redfish!

    It is cheap and simple.
    See the video blow.

To do it on the cheap all that is required is a hot-air popcorn popper.
The place I get my green raw beans sells a $20 popper and, when ordered with the popper, 8 lbs. of sampler beans from around the world is another $20.
Great coffee for $2.50 a pound.
What other hobby or endeavor might actually save money? None of mine!

Most of the beans I roast are single-region or single-plantation beans from all around the world.

Sort of like wine appreciation without the cost or pretentiousness.

I have done this many times. I found a few of the air poppers at garage sales for cheap. I love how they make the noise when the heat builds up.
they go through two distinct phases and you have to watch for that to occur.

the biggest mistake I made was I vacuum packed mine before they had gassed off and the bag puffed out.

Now I let them gas off for a couple of days before sealing them up
