I used Nosler Custom 2.23 Match Grade to take these 3 piglets in Texas with my Mossberg MVP

Yeah I thought AR with ACOG for hogs as I might need a quick second shot. My place is a wooded 50 acres in ETX, so there won't be any long shots.

If it is wooded how are you going to get follow up shots through tree's? They are hard enough to hit well in the open on the run. 50 acres doesn't offer much for tracking a poorly hit animal either.

I guess some folks can guarantee precise shot placement each and every time. I certainly cannot.
IMO as a hunter you owe a precise and ethical shot on any animals. Do those shots have to be picked and chosen at times depending on several variables? Sure they do but that's part of the hunt otherwise it's just killing.

When it comes to hogs is about the killing. Shoot them, and shoot again!
If you are after the meat an animal that runs with adrenaline or is gut shot does the meat absolutely no good. If they are causing major damage then sure killing is understandable. Same goes for Prarie dogs and coyotes as well.

Nice shooting and good job... but those are little piglets. What if they'd weighed 200-400 pounds? Would .223 Rem have been appropriate for those big bad boys?
Thank You :) That piglet "2 fer" was a real surprise, didn't expect that. I used my Remington 700 7mm-08 bolt action rifle and my reloads with Hornady SST bullets when I shot these hogs

Have you considered a AR in 7.62x39?? hunting ammo cost about the same as .223 but plinking and target practice loads are much cheaper while still allowing you to throw some heavier grain chunks of lead.

I have one with a YHM 20'' barrel that will do just over 1 inch at 100 with good ammo.

. The picture is three shots made an adjustment and got two more shots off before they called cease-fire on the range.

Will 5.56/.223 work for hunting in Texas, as long as you use good ammo, get good shot placement and understand the limits of what the round can do you will be fine. Happy hunting and be sure to post pictures, or else it didnt happen
