Recently picked up a Steyr M95 and would like to see if the recoil is really as bad as everyone says. Is there anyone in DFW that regularly stocks 8x56r? I have 25 rounds of mixed German and Hungarian headstamps, but would rather not shoot the surplus stuff because it's kinda cool looking.

I bought several of those MILSURPS when they were under $100. with shipping. I have some inventory of that round from Graf and Sons. I don't know if they still stock it but I reload that cartridge.

You might check their website to see if it still available.

    http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/category/categoryId/257?

I also load Lebel bullets into the rifle cases with TRAILBOSS powder for low power target loads (FUN).

    http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/5402

Don't discard the cases if you buy loaded ammo. I will buy your 'empties'.

I'm not far away so let me know what you decide to do.

I found a few like grafs that sell online, I think rareammo was the other. I was hoping to find a local source rather than paying shipping and trying to arrange for someone to be home to sign for the package.

Graf and Sons has a FLAT $7.95 shipping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never had to sign for a package from them but I live in a rural area and I also signed a waiver so the Mail Lady can sign for me and leave it in the mailbox.

I just realized you are talking about loaded ammo, NO USPS so it will be UPS and they might require signature.

Found some Hornady and some surplus ay the show in Mesquite today. Also met a gentleman who will reload the brass for me. The cartridge is too long for my Lee progressive press.

    Fishhooker,

Unless they have stopped loading that round quite recently, PRVI PARTIZAN loads 8x56mm & any store that sells PP ammo should be able to order it for you, IF they don't stock that caliber.
(I've been gone from the DFW area too long to know where to look up there.)

Btw, 8x56R Hungarian is relatively easily made from 7.62x54 Russian Boxer-primed cases, if you prefer to "roll your own" & FOR CHEAP. - The bullets are the standard 8mm projectiles for 8x57mm Mauser.

ADDENDA: I just checked. PP still loads 8x56R.

    yours, satx

    Fishhooker,

IF I was going to load 8x56R, I would load up a moderate ".30-40 Krag equivalent" load of a GCCB/JHP of 200 grains in front of 34 grains of IMR4895. = That loading I suspect would even be suitable for elk/moose out to 200M, much less anything smaller.

Fwiw, I'm way too cheap to NOT reload a mild cartridge like 8x56mm Hungarian, with GCCB. = I see NO good reason to "buy factory" for hunting any game animal in TX, IF one reloads at all.

    Fishhooker,

Btw, the 1930's Hungarian military load was a 210 grain FMJ bullet at about 2500FPS.

    Fishhooker,

    Most likely.
Otoh, my ".30-40 Krag equivalent" reload is A KILLER & quite mild on the shoulder. = Out of my cousin's .30-06 (I load a LOT of the "30-40 loads from family/friends in .06, in .308 & my .300Savage.) it does "the Texas heart shot" quite well. - Goes in the rear at .30 cal. & exits the neck/chest at half-dollar size.
(You just cannot kill a buck deader than dead.)

What I like (aside from the low price & gentle PUSH) is that that load doesn't blood-shot much edible meat when passing through the shoulder area of a WT.

    The 8 X 56R is NOT .323!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Graf has the correct .329 bullets in 205gr.

Here is info from the interweb.............

Reloading the 8×56mmR Mannlicher can be problematic, due to the .329" groove diameter of the barrel. Commonly available .323" 8mm "S"-bullets will produce very poor accuracy.

Just a warning in case you want to use the correct bullet.
