    Don't bother. The carbon helps seal the gas, and unless you are shooting hundreds of thousands of rounds in FA daily, carbon buildup will never be an issue.

    I would normally agree. But I've got a PSA 6.8 upper that needs to have carbon scraped off the bolt's tail every 300 rounds for it to run without stoppages. Only AR I own that does that too. CATM-4 tool is what I use. They sell them on Amazon.

    Forgive my ignorance, but what is the specific purpose of these tools like this one? Not the picks and brushes.

    One end cleans the carbon off the back of the bolt. The other end is used to clean the carbon that accumulates inside the BCG. Mine is a little different than the one in the photo. it has a slot to clean the carbon off the firing pin. Maybe that's what the 3 holes are for on this one.
