    Well, 2 problems.
    1) Reach for the charging handle and goes in and out of the bolt loosely, no "clicks" etc. Probably missing a spring or clip in there.
    2) Pull the handle out, pull back to cock the action and there's a loud "click" and the bolt stays to the rear. Mag in, mag out, doesn't matter, bolt stays back. But...pull the trigger and the bolt shoots forward into battery.

    what the...?

eta: I've searched and am still searching...is there such a thing as an open-bolt AR-7?

eta 2: the trigger/bolt etc in this one looks like no other that I've seen in any AR-7.

Need to explore #2. Is the action clean?

#1 is normal. Mine has no detent or a way to secure the bolt handle in any position. It just slides freely.

Sounds like you have an old Charter Arms model. It's not a mag problem; it's a chamber problem. CA cut the chamber at about 90 degrees with no feed ramp or chamfering. Once I rounded the edges of mine out a little bit it now feeds 100%. I recommend using a rotary tool unless you want to spend several hours hand-filing.
