I cannot for the life of me picture our founding fathers standing around looking at each other and saying....."welp boys, I reckon the good times are long gone, never coming back." Really? Heck, I know things look bad, and I know that there are alot of things that suck right now. But dangit, this is NOT how I was raised. I was raised to believe in what our founding fathers believed, what they fought for, and what many have died for. We gotta stop having this defeated attituide and stand up and say enough is enough. You either have the sack to fight for it or you dont, you either believe in it or you dont. I for one will never think that all is lost, or all hope is gone.

Im 28 years old. In my lifetime I dont ever remeber there being "the good times" and it never will be.

You are the same age as my youngest daughter.

The only thing the both of you are lacking is the age based perspective that makes you keenly aware of just how much things have changed.

AND, that can be a good thing.

No more despair, my young friend. You got a chance at a beautiful life ahead. When I was your age I was staring down the barrel of an AK47 and things have turned out. Pay no attention to the man behind curtain, take the bull by the horns, make the best of every situation, and endeavor to make your personal world exactly what you want to be.

As much as I would like to believe that things can get better, I think that ultimately it boils down to there being two more-or-less easily definable groups: those who are reliant on government, and those who pay for it. The former out-number the latter, and since apparently this country has effectively become a democracy rather than a constitutional republic, they will continue winning. Things are only going to get worse as more and more of the country is effectively turned into New York and California as far as taxation, gun laws, and general government involvement in every aspect of our lives is concerned. I have no solutions, nor does any one else that I've seen, other than at best a delaying tactic. That's certainly worthwhile, and I greatly admire the likes of Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, but I don't see how they can roll back the inevitable march of socialism in the current or likely future environments.

I mean, it seems a great number of people, perhaps a majority, are upset that the opposition has the audacity to want to delay the individual mandate. In other words, stave off for another year the prying eyes of government into your personal purchases, and keep the illusion that we are citizens with rights rather than consumers with fine-print warranties going another twelve months. That's the current fight, and I have a great deal of confidence the republican establishment will cave.

Sad thing is, and IMNSHO, the "right" of 'everyman' to vote, no matter their contribution to society, therefore enabling the ability to divide by those seeking to further political power/agendas, and to then pander to those divisions for political gain, was the very first, albeit subtle, nail in the coffin of our Republic.

You can gasp, rail, gnash your teeth, and cry foul over the obvious result of a supposed cherished belief, but history is proving it to be so ... and that one tweaking of what the founders originally set up will continue to preside over the rapid diminishing of a once unique Republic.

That said, my oldest daughter, SIL and grandchildren live in the UK. Not that I condone it or excuse it, but they have carved out a good life for themselves despite a "nanny state" government.

    Besides, pendulums do swing ...

Which brings us back to this well-known quote:

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury"

I appreciate the words of encouragement and I should point out that I feel I do have a very beautiful life. I am married to an amazing woman, have a beautiful daughter and another on the way, and a wealth of personal relationships. I am a very wealthy and blessed person.

I do not, however, see much of a hope of fixing our problems through politics. I believe that our political Balkanization is a symptom of our moral failures and that the solution is more spiritual than political.

That being said, I'll continue to do what I can here while I also diversify my assets abroad. Chile looks mighty nice.

Good times depend on perspective, the only things that really change are the names, the date, and technology involved. Use the technology as does your opponent. Yes there are deffinite problems, but looking back, I have had and expect more good times.

I only wish it was so easy. Ask someone who lived thru the depression or the dust bowl, or a POW in Hanoi Hilton Inn the killing fields of any war...all of these I have direct knowledge of, those were dark days in many ways...

No you fail when you lose the battle, no matter how hard your fought, ask the Japs, Germans, Sony BetaMax, Blackberry, Microsoft, Oldsmobile, Nash, Hudson, Packard and the list is a jillion miles long of those who fought hard only to lose, most never gave up, they just die often leaving a long death rattle like the USSR.

But as you said it depends upon your perspective: Obama is a FAILURE, but then many see it different. Sometimes winning is very difficult to ascertain. John Kerry, Hillary Clinton and a building full of Congress folks...

The Japs tried, got thier ass handed to them. Even after they knew they were beat.
Hudson, Nash, Olds, And a zillion others gambled, tried, lost, for a lot of reasons.
You only Fail if you don't try. Personally , I don't think the good times are really over, not as long as there are good people willing to try.
Fail to try,,,,,,, try and lose are not the same. If they are, why bother with anything? Never knew anything but pain, and I earn every damn scar. Had a lot of fun getting them, look forward to more. Only way i give up on good times, painful or otherwise, is when I die.
