Way back in the olden days, the Army made the Sportsman's Range on Fort Hood available to anyone on weekends - for free. I haven't been there in about a hundred years, but they had rifle targets out to 400+ yards, and 25 and 50-yard pistol targets. Anyone know if it is still available?

It is, but you need access to the post. And the distances have changed.

I have been a member for quite a few years now. Really like it. It is kept up better than a lot of ranges and the people are great for the most part. You will always have those that are less courteous than most, but for the most part, good folks.
They allow self healing hanging targets. And with some restriction, they now allow steel hanging targets. 200 unrestricted shooting and 300/500 yards with qualifying. They just want to make sure you can keep rounds on the range and know procedures. After seeing some people shoot, I can't say I blame them.

is there any public or BLM land nearby that is legal to shoot on?
A sand bar on a navigable waterway is about the only thing, but your bullets can't cross a property line or the waterway so it'd be a bit of a challenge. Don't get mad at me if you get jammed up over it either... INAL

I did but figured everyone would know some secret ranch or have some inside local info on some hidden shooters paradise.
Of course we do, but we don't invite people we don't know.
