The state’s top law enforcement agency will beef up its presence in Austin and help local police handle violent crime and traffic incidents, city and state officials said Monday.

The move — agreed upon by Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick — is a dramatic response as the city’s police department struggles with persistent vacancies in its officer ranks, a problem in virtually every major police department in the country. Austin has also had problems with long response times to emergency calls.

Defund the police they said. What could go wrong?
It's going to get worse, before it gets worse...

180+- officers will be at 23years of service and eligible for a full retirement within a month or maybe two along with another big group that will be at 20+ and eligible to "buy years of service" so they can retire too. Iirc, its about 230 officer that could just retire. Civil service may incentivice some new officers to leave as well...

In short its bad, and its going to keep getting worse for a while... we are only able to hire (hire, not graduate) about 1/3 of the officer we have leave... I think it will take 3-5 years to bring us steady ONCE the city decides to fix the problems they created, then another 5-7 to get where we need to be.

As someone front line to that shit show - would you recommend someone looking to enter LE actually apply for APD, or run and go look elsewhere? Is there a likelihood that leadership of the PD and the city is going to unfuck the issues faced, or continue to deteriorate as more officers take their retirement and run?
