I agree with her, except on the atheism stuff. I just wish she wasn't so wordy. She needs to "talk less and say more".

I agree with that. The athiest thing doesn't bother me. I am a Christian and I realize not all folks are going to believe. However, athiesm aside, she is spot on, or should I say was spot on about what was coming even so many years ago. The country being ran by big corporations, lobbyist, and the political bastard childs that their money buys. She saw it coming.

What's that saying about Ayn Rand's magnum opus, Atlas Shrugged? Oh, yeah -

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

Rand wasn't always wrong. There were some simplistic truths* there. Then she took them to extremes and it all goes off the rails. Ultimately, simply dismissing her as a twisted, manipulative, hypocritical intellectual poser** is far more helpful and far less maddening than trying to tease some decent life lessons out of the near-impenetrable morass of words in which she so successfully obfuscated all her insights.

God, I worshipped Rand when I was young. Thank God, again, that I finally grew beyond that state.

    Footnotes -

    * - "Power corrupts. Give governments power and they'll go bad, hurting good people." Wow. Hell of an insight there. I'm surprised no one thought of it before. </sarcasm>

** - Don't get me wrong. She was smart. She just wasn't always the smartest person in the room. She worked her butt off to cultivate that image, though, both to the public and even to herself, via her often brain-dead acolytes.

Her fictional works are good. Basically an answer to the dystopian country she came from.

I do find the worship of the intellect and the individual both off putting and dangerous as is her Objectivist nonsense.

Im just saying dont fault people for wanting to live in a land where the virtuous people set themselves and start to rebuild a just civilization.

I am not saying in any way that everything she said or belived is right in my view. Im just pointing out that in her fictional works, she did make good points and she did have a vision of where we were headed as a country if we didnt stop it.

Right. Because thats where she grew up and really grew up during the revolution and Leninism.

Ayn Rand: Very worthy but too wordy. I prefer George Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984. Orwell was a committed Socialist, but in his writings, he foretold all that could go wrong with socialism. He missed his 1984 prediction by thirty years, but it has come to pass ...

I love both of those books. Fahrenheit 451 is another favorite of mine.

Animal Farm is a must. Read Starship Troopers... Seriously. Ayn Rand gets thrown around too much and her ideas spun (like that she was an atheist when she considered her self an objectivist for example). Atlas Shrugged was a great book, but people misconstrue quite a bit of it, but that it's off topic. Read Firestorm. Another great political thriller.
