Beginning of Hollywood Anti-gun activism?

I have been watching episodes of the original "Dragnet" from the 50's. Dragnet and Adam-12 were my dad's favorite police shows - my dad was in HPD. I just finished Season 2, Episode 7, December 18, 1952. The .22 Rifle for Christmas. I was quite disappointed to hear Sgt Joe Friday say in response to his partner's question:

Partner: Well, what's it all prove, Joe?
Friday: You don't give a kid a gun for Christmas.

I'm sure I was given at least 3 guns, and maybe 5, for Christmas.

but far worse is taking life/political advice from a fictitious character on tv

If you ever read any of those old gun magazines from the 50's the fight for gun control was well established. Nothing new going on.
