Threading is assembling? Seems like a stretch by the internet. Anyone have the alleged ATF letters?

Cutting the barrel in half is making a whole new firearm according to ATF so if you are on their shitlist for some reason: Yes they will argue threading counts as assembling.

And it's gonna cost you a lot of money to convince the judge otherwise.
