I'm thinking about joining the 1911 club and looking at 45ACP. Looks like Rock Island and Kimber have some nice looking offerings for under a grand. Unfortunately Colts and Dan Wessons are a bit out of my budget.

Kimber 1911 reviews seem to be all over the place. People make YouTube videos for the purpose of trashing them. I've seen lots of folks say as soon as they switched the magazine with a better quality one it fixed any jamming issues.

    Any thoughts? Recommendations?

    I've got 1911s from Colt, Kimber (a Gen. 1), Rock Island (5), and S&W.

Rock Island Armory's price points allow for plenty of upgrades if desired, and mine have been utterly reliable.

    I broke in a new Rock this morning. M1911 A1 5'' Nickle.
About 100 rds. through KCI MAGA (came with the gun) Colt MAGAzines, Wilson Combat, and even
Pro Mag. Not one problem with any.

I have a Para Ordnance that shoots great. I say Ordnance because I think they have better guns than the current Para which I believe is made by Remington.

Through the years I’ve owned 1911’s from Sig(7), Springfield(3), Kimber(2), Rock Island(2), Colt(2), S&W(1), Remington(1), and STI(1) chambered in 9,40, 45, and 10mm, and have loved almost every one. I‘ve only ever experienced jams twice. The first was a newer Kimber, but only while using a pro-mag, and the 2nd was with a brand new Rock Island double stack, which straightened out after a few full power rounds. But I don’t try to turn each one into a race gun either. My advice is to pick lots of them up and see what feels good in your hand. Don’t be afraid of buying a used one either if the price is right.

TLDR; Buy whatever feels good in your hand.

Yes Sir. I acquired a commander sized Sig 1911 in a trade once that somebody put lots of Wilson Combat parts on. It was a decent enough 1911, but it just never spoke to me. I traded it to a member here who absolutely loves it.

I have a full size Ruger SR1911. Everyone said you have to own a 1911. Never had a problem with the Ruger, everything I fed it worked.
I’ve got the commander sized Ruger SR1911, and it‘s a lot of gun for the money. I also have a RIA 1911 and have shot a few other RIA 1911s, and they punch well above their weight as well. I also have a Colt, Remington, & SA in 1911, and based on my experiences, I’d go with either the Ruger or the RIA to start. They are all fine pieces; it’s just my preference
