What in your opinion is the best bolt-action rifle out there, and what caliber do you prefer?

I tend to favor the Remington 700 with a heavy barrel.

Also a fan of the Springfield 1903 and K98 Mauser.

Calibers, I really enjoy .308 ... and I have come to like .243 / 6mm Remington more and more.

I like the Remington 700 for bolt guns, have one in 22-250. I had a mauser 98 in a 270 with an ultralight synth. stock. Kicked so hard it was no fun to shoot and the cheap optics my dad put on it wouldn't hold a zero. Traded it plus cash at a gun show for my Ruger No.1 in 25-06

I've checked out, or shot, the following and they are all pretty damn sweet.

    ArmaLite AR30
    Sako TRG-22
    Sig Sauer SSG3000

All of these way outclass a good Rem 700, but certainly exceed their pricing points too. The Sako has to be the cream of the crop in my opinion, with the Sig a very, very close second.

AR10, Ruger 10/22, etc. are not bolt-action guns.

The CZ was higher on my list until I put some time behind one. The trigger weight moves around alot, which kinda distracts from the coolest feature of the CZ.

For the factory high end tacticals I would go with the Sako TRG series. Just buttery smooth in every way. Accuracy International would be a good second, but I found their trigger lacking when compared to the TRG. Blaser R98 Tactical was also very neat with the straight pull, but the TRG just felt like sex in your hands.

For custom work, a GAP rifle built on a Surgeon Action is my wet dream.

For general purpose a Steyr Scout in 308 on the expensive side of things and a Tikka T3 in 308. Same buttery smooth action as the Sako, just not the price tag. I keep eyeing one, just cant seem to pull the wallet out since I have too many projects in the hopper right now and not wnough cash in the bank.

For the semi oddball, I cant make my mind up category... The Remi VTR. Felt and balanced good in the hands, had a decent trigger, albeit heavy. Just cant figure out that triangular barrel thingie and the POS stock.

    Swiss K31.

They are inexpensive, extremely accurate, and the some of the most beautifully built rifles that I have seen. They just don't make rifles like these anymore, well, at least not that I can afford.

    Tc i bolt?

Does anybody like the S & W/TC I Bolt? I like the way it looks and the $50.00 rebate program that makes the price fairly decent. I know pistols pretty well but have limited knowledge of rifles.
I talked to a Academy sales person who said it was cheaply made (which I doubt being a big S & W fan) but probably just because he didn't have any to sell and I've learned to take gun store salesman's opinion with a grain of salt. What do you guys think?

S&W lost my gun dollars about the same time I stopped buying US vehicles!
Do they have any military contracts?
Is their workforce diverse to the point they produce shit?
I remember all their recalls do you?

Thank's for the reply but I was looking for a "objective" opinion.

For the money a Savage is a pretty good rifle. This is an older FP110 in .308 with custom Multicam coating with a Super Sniper scope. This does not have the Accutrigger but it shoots like a dream. Accutriggers I hear are even better. They only have the short action FP10 available now. I am going to get the barrel Duracoated to match the Multicam base color to help it blend in a little more.

Mauser 98 and if you want a scope, an early FN (Belgium). Not the InterArms version.

7 x 57 Mauser for any thing in Texas.

I absolutely love my Browning A-bolt in .223. But to be honest, it has had a lot of "tune up" work. I also enjoy my .308 Savage FP10 with it's accu-trigger.

    The Browning--

The Savage (note the crowded range!)

I am sure there are other rifles just as good and even better, but I love shooting these two!

Nice rifles but I'm really impressed by that gun range. Where is it?

Nice rifles but I'm really impressed by that gun range. Where is it?

NRA Whittington Center near Raton, NM. It is an incredible shooting facility!
"[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]The Whittington Center hosts a variety of shooting ranges, including ranges for smallbore rifle, high power rifle, black powder, trap, skeet, sporting clays, hunter sight-in, PPC, smallbore rifle silhouette, highpower rifle silhouette, long range pistol silhouette, hunter pistol silhouette, benchrest, and practical pistol. All ranges are designed so that every range on the Whittington Center can be used concurrently."

You can tent camp there, there is a huge RV park on site, they have cabins you can rent, or you can stay in the Competitor Housing which is like staying in a dorm. If you go during the middle of the week, it is almost never crowded. Here is the web site and a few of my pics that I took on my family's vacation last summer.

It is a great place to stay and play. Wildlife everywhere! I had to stop shooting when sighting in one of my rifles because a mule deer doe walked out to my 100 m target and started scratching herself on it! After a few minutes she moved on and I was able to continue shooting.

    Sorry for going off topic
