    In the woods...
You will find varying and opposed opinions on this topic.
Among other things, variables could include:

    1. Intended purpose (home defense, concealed carry, battle scenario, etc.)
    2. Adaptability
    3. Reliability
    4. User ability/ease of operation for a neophyte.
    5. Aftermarket support (customization and or parts for repair)
    6. Place in history
    7. Availability
    8. Affordability

And that's just going off my random thoughts sitting here this morning.

I could easily argue the .38 snubby was the "best", but it usually gets left at home while I choose to be accompanied by a semi-auto 9mm of some sort.
Then again, if I were traveling to an urban area I might have an AR platform "handgun" with me!

1911 comes in first in all of those categories.

    Hello Gentlemen,

I say the best handgun is the one that comes in handy in a clutch. I bet if one had to use a Cobra .22 Magnum Derringer to save one's life, that pistol would be the best. But for myself, the best handguns are Glocks. I know this because I own many, and I carry them daily. I would only carry the best tools when endeavoring to protect myself and my family.

I hate to be a skeptic, but I’m saying only 9 more posts until we should check the for sale ads.

The CZ 75, Browning hi power and 1911s have all earned their place in history but my personal favorite to this day is the grand power xcalibur. Probably the most unknown high performing pistol ever.
