Look for a good used police trade-in Remington 870. Durable, reliable, easy to fix, unlimited available mods.

The PoPo don’t put nearly as many rounds through them as most hunters do.

    Good Luck !

Mossberg 500 if you like a top tang safety like I do. Maverick 88 if you prefer a crossbolt trigger safety. Other barrels will interchange between these. As a general rule, barrels for the Rems will cost more than the same for a Mossberg.

If you like the crossbolt safety, the Rem 870 would be your next more expensive option. (Read previous posts regarding 870 quality issues over the years.) GT often has deals on both used Rems and Mossbergs.

Like someone here stated, you can get two barrel sets including a "bird" barrel with interchangeable chokes and either an 18" defense or "riot" barrel, or a rifle sighted deer/hog barrel. These are available for around $500.

I used my Remington 870 loaded with 00 Buckshot on small hogs along with my Mossberg 835 both12 Gauge. They worked fine on hogs 150 pounds and less.

Best shotgun for the money in my opinion is the Texas assembled Maverick 88 from Mossberg.

    An overlooked shotgun I feel.
I got one of these about 12 years ago. It was used during a home defense class which used more shells in a few hours than it has used in the years since.

Mav 88 in 20 & 12 ga. works fine, many barrel styles interchangeable (mossy built in Tx with some Mex steel). great for birds, slugs or #4 for hogs close. Long range (>50 yds) hunting, nope.
