After searching the Hou gun stores unsuccessfully for real black powder (not Pyrodex) I finally lucked out. Visiting Lubbock on a trip to visit my sons at Tech black powder is available at retail stores and sold at the gun show.
Apparently Houston and Harris County, Dallas, Fredricksburg and other urban areas have local restrictions. Not so Lubbock.
