On 3/21 and 3/2 Boyert (previously Tactical Firearms) in Katy is having S&W bring in some of their wares to try. They will have free firearm rentals, and some giveaways.

There are a few models I would like to try. I have never shot a Shield, but would like to give it a try... Almost certainly there will be something else that catches my eye, and wallet maybe....

Have they re-branded Tactical Firearms? I checked Boyerts webpage and it still shows only one location. Texas Tactical in Katy still has their webpage up and does not mention Boyert.

Don't really care who owns it, but want to keep this thread updated with the best information. http://www.texasguntalk.com/forums/houston/62225-greater-houston-gun-ranges.html As in what to look up to find them and what is on the building.

I've followed Boyert for a little while now, and I've noticed his websites are aweful. They have great potential, but they miss the mark in execution and updating. With fairly successful businesses as his, you'd think he'd have better quality. Idk, I guess he's too busy spanking Alcede!

    I met John Boyert yesterday.

    Nice, knowledge guy.

He agreed with me when I said Alcede just needs to shut the f**k up and move on.

Going to try and check out their Westheimer location this week. The selection in Katy is not jaw dropping, but a vast improvement over what the previous owners had.

I agree with the website opinion stated above. Lots of potential, but lacking gun porn.

Ok, thanks. Sounds like no need to update the other tread at this time. If they change the name on the building, let me know.

The sign on Mason has been changed to Boyert. The sign on the building still says Tactical Firearms, but I'm sure that is temporary.

I visited there last week with my son. Everyone was super friendly and helpful.

If I were closer I would for sure. There are several S&W's I'd like to try out. It doesn't seem that often to get a chance. I wish more gun manufacturers had "Demo Days" like the golf club industry.

    FYI Update for anyone interested:

Dropped in about 1030 to check it out (Katy location): The S&W rep has the table set up of all the pistol lines as you walk in, and then their AR15/10 stuff to the side. Overall it's nothing special, but you can handle all the pistols/rifles.

Lanes were pretty open, only maybe 5 occupied and it wasn't very crowded in general. It'd definitely be a good opportunity for taking your son/daughter up there and being able to test out pistols very inexpensively today.

Contrary to what the advertisements sounded like, don't expect big fanfare or them to just be throwing out swag & door prizes. I wasn't even sure how to donate to the Katy PD and/or sign up for the raffle (the girl sitting at the table is just for people who want to sign the release to shoot the S&W rentals/ammo packs)

Maybe the Westheimer location is a little more exciting; I was kind of disappointed and hoping for something a little more on this crappy rainy day :p

If get all my errands with the family done, I might head over to shoot pistols and check it out.

I just went to Katy location, and it was awesome.

Fill out waiver, get wrist band. Buy ammo, $6/10 rounds any caliber, no limit.

Go to reserved shooting area, with two firearms in each lane. Fire at will. Targets are free.

At 1:30 there was no waiting in any lane.

Fired 9mm Shield, and Stainless Steel 1911 .45.

An awesome experience. I will probably return before it is over.

Boyert gets a big thumbs up from me.

I won some range passes and a t-shirt in the raffle. There is a pistol being raffled on Tuesday. One free ticket per shooter.

There may have to be a few more "test firings" when I go to pick up my bounty tomorrow morning. They open at 11:00.

Because someone asked, they have a S&W .500 on display, but not for demo.

I went and put 100 rounds down range with my 1911 and about 60 with my 22/45.

I was there between 3:00 and 4:00 and it was pretty busy.

I didn't partake in the S&W deal as I am not in the market for one, but I did buy a $5 raffle ticket for the gun they are giving away Tuesday.

I also had a brief chat with John Boyert again. I told him I didn't have the scratch at the moment to pick up that Ruger SR45 I want, but he said when I was ready to come on by and he would waive the rental fee for me to shoot one before I plunk down the cash for one. I thought that was pretty cool.

Today (Sunday) was not as good as yesterday. Apparently the S&W rep was only here on Saturday. However, the firearms were still available for $6/10rounds for firing, and not any range or target fees for those participating. Most guns went unused, but there was a line waiting for the 9mm Shield.

I also tried the M&P 15. I was surprised how much it reminded me of my HK MR223 as far as heft, and sturdiness. If I did not already have the MR223 it may be a runner up. Yes, I know there are a lot of good AR's made by companies other than HK.... :)

One handed, or two handed, or even weak side, the Shield performed very well for me. It would be difficult for me to give up my Walther PPS which is my current CCW, and a deserving favorite for me.

I am sorry to admit that I had an awhh crap moment. Loaded up nice M&P Pro 40 S&W pistol and it fired but had almost no recoil. I thought it was great but it did not load the next round. So I called over the RO to look at it.... He told me that 9mm ammo does not work very well in a .40. :banghead:

With so many pistols that look very similar, I made the mistake of loading the wrrong ammo. No harm, no foul....

No harm, no foul. At least every one was okay.
