OK - here's the deal. I've got a 2008 F150 that I bought with ~40k miles on it. It's now at 150+k and have had very few problems with it. I'm on the positive end of mechanically inclined. In the snowpocapylse, had a weird thing happen - thumping when I came to a stop. Very definitely tied to wheel rotation speed. I thought it was ice, etc. and blew it off. So today, coming home from church, the truck started thumping when I put on the brakes at slow speeds. I thought, loose lug nuts, cracked rotors.... I jacked up all four corners and saw and heard nothing when I spun the wheels. Lug nuts tight, no obvious issues with the rotors, brake pads have plenty of meat, and the "problem" disappeared. Ideas?

Last u-joint I replaced drove me crazy trying to find the source of the noise.
It only occurred during light braking at slower speeds.

Check all your front and rear frame and frame to arm bushings. Also all front steering bushings.
Is it something you felt in the steering or in the floor and seat?

Fast and furious suggestions coming in. Good idea Cam - I'll try that the next time I feel it. Definitely not in the steering - just in the seat/floor. I've had my share of warped rotors, but this is not like that. I suspected something like a cracked rotor, but it is intermittant.

Hmm. Did you feel "thumping" as you stopped?
Yep. Apparently, those slow easy stops were the only time there was no torque either way on the driveline. That's when the slack in the u-joint made itself known. But I chased brake problems for a couple of days.
