Oh yeah, your own grown beef is often, but not always terrific. I worked on ranches and dairy farms as a kid. So, all the beef I ate was home grown.
Chefs, are now touting retired dairy cattle as great, grass fed beef since they're not bloated on grain and some no so desirable stuff.
As a kid we were taught 'select beef' which is what dairy cattle are classified as, were ok, but lowest on the juicy and tender food delicious chain.
Select, Choice and Prime was what we had to choose from with Select being the most commonly available at the lowest cost.
It wasn't bad, just not marbled like Choice and Prime and generally rather tough, so I get a big kick out of chefs now touting it.
