Just got a Dell Laptop (Dell G5 15 SE 5505) and I can't get it to boot from USB flash drive or CD drive. The flash drive is bootable, I've used it before.

It came with Win 10 Home.

There are three things I'd like to do:

    1. I'd like to clone the HD to have as a backup.

    2. I'd like to run Win 10 Pro instead (I have the disc) but I don't want to upgrade the current install.

    3. I'd like the option to install a Linux distro.

If I had another HD would it be possible to install Win 10 Pro, up to the point where it has just finished copying the files to the HD using another computer and then putting the new HD into the laptop?

Bootable flash drive was in USB port but not recognized when pics were taken.

Ran into this once, but I have slept since then and don't recall the cure.

Was something in the BIOS boot related settings. May have been boot mode.

Sorry I cannot remember the details.

    Good luck.

I've found cures for Dell systems other than the G5

Its been a while for me also but I think oldag is on to something here. If I recall correctly you have to have the boot mode set to UEFI rather than Legacy for it to properly boot up. I think you may need to boot into a special mode outside of the bios to get to these boot options on a Dell laptop.

Whats the boot order set to in the BIOS? I've not monkied around much with modern machines, but in another life I was a computer tech, back when the biggest issues were being able to boot from a floppy disc, a CD, or different HDD's. If you want to boot from a flash drive, I'd think you need to have the USB/Flash drive set to boot before the HDD, be it before or after boot from CD/DVD option.

The only options are the internal HD or LAN. Bios does not recognize any other bootable devices.

    This shows the boot order

Once you think you have the CMOS settings right, as per suggestions above, it is possible that your laptop will still only boot from one USB slot. If that is the case, it may be the one closest to the power plug.
    Good luck!

    Disable secure boot.
And try with, or without Legacy or UEFI enabled or disabled.
