A change in the WIC food program will hopefully have families eating healthier.
Starting on October 1st, 2009, the state changed the types and amounts of food women and their children can receive. The WIC program now includes fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, whole grain products, baby food, soy and reduced-fat milk and tofu.
The purpose is to provide a nutritional variety, with foods that are low in fat and high in fiber.
Shelley Parks, HEB Public Affairs, says, "The reason they are doing this, they want to make sure everyone has access to healthy eating, to help control diabetes and heart conditions."
WIC in Corpus Christi serves more than 15000 women and children each month.
If you would like more information about the food program, call their office at 826-1355.
