SCUBA certifications are going for $500 now  I’m in Georgetown, TX and am looking for cheap places to get certified. I hear there are some oil rig dives in the Gulf of Mexico.

I got certified in 1971 at the YMCA when they had ex Navy Seals as their instructors.

Don't remember what the cost was, but I'm thinking around $50.00.

I know, I know, the cost has gone up in the last several years.

Texas A&M offered SCUBA as a PE course, so I took it in the fall semester. That meant our open water dive was in December. What fun! The lake was turning and the visiibility was nil. One of the steps we had to complete was to do a back somersault and when I came around, everyone was gone! We could not regroup, so we had to surface and find each other up top.

Then, I moved to WA state and dove in a lake once (first time to use a wet suit). Sold most of my gear to a buddy shortly after. DAMN, those lakes are cold! But the visibility was much better.

I took my cert. at A&M during PE. So many wanted the course you had to do a swimming test to qualify. Open water phase at Lake Travis.
