Crystal Lake police are investigating a shooting on the 100 block of Terra Cotta Avenue late Sunday morning.
Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Dennis Harris said police were called to the home at 11:37 a.m. with a report that a woman had been shot in the face.
Upon arrival, officers were informed by Dale Barkstrom that he had accidentally discharged a semi-automatic handgun while laying in bed next to his girlfriend.
The 28-year-old girlfriend, whose name is being withheld, was struck in the jaw by the bullet.
She was airlifted from the scene to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with non-life threatening injuries. Harris added the woman's condition is unknown at this point, but said she has gone through surgery and is sedated at the hospital.
Barkstrom, 28, was charged with one count of reckless discharge of a firearm late Sunday night, Harris said. Reckless discharge of a firearm is a Class 4 felony.
He was taken to McHenry County Jail, where he awaits bond court Monday morning
