Mrs. Hoji wanted chickens. No problem, Mrs. Hoji wants chickens, Mrs. Hoji gets chickens.
Cost of getting 8 production red hen chicks and 1 rooster.
    Let’s break that down.
    About $40 for the birds.
    About $1000 for the coop
$800 for a 40 yard roll off dumpster
$150 per hour for demolition of two trashed buildings on a concrete pad where the chicken coop will go.( probably about 6 hours using a skid steer to demo buildings)
So, close to $3k to start.
But damn, they are cute. :)

Just beware that they attract raccoons, owls, coyotes just in the nighttime. Chicken hawks in the daytime too.

If you can keep them in the coop and safe they should be fine.
The chickens will be what gets me the thermal clip on I want ;) when I am out of town they will need to be protected at night, and that will fall to Mrs Hoji. Thermal will make that much more effective

My brother in law decided he needed to raise chickens. He built a chicken house, fenced in a yard, built a shed for feed, etc. Then the foxes and coyotes discovered his chickens. He spent about a year fighting a losing battle until some old timer he was talking to told him to get donkeys. He got 3 donkeys and penned them up in the same area as the chickens. Overnight the varmint problems went away. Of course, then you need hay and feed for the donkeys, and the donkeys like to break out of the fence, and they like to kick people, and they need to get shots and such from the vet. After a few years, he tired of the whole process and sold the property and moved to a smaller property that didn't need as much upkeep.

When I had chicks I lost more of them to rat snakes than anything else so just make sure you snake proof your pens. P.S. They can go through chicken wire however they can not get out after they eat the chicks.

First timer here. These are ... the spice girls:

They are 9 weeks. No rooster. They are named for spices to drive home the reallity that they will one day become an immaculately prepared dinner. Their personalities have also earned two nicknames: First and second are called for their anticipated order of departure.

Been plenty more fun than expected.

One miniature donkey is all that’s needed. They don’t eat much and anything remotely varmint-ish learns really quickly. My neighbor spent $12k on hip surgery for their dog that used to chase and jump at my mini donkey through the fence. Now when he gets close to her fence she gives him a look with her ears pinned back and he hauls ass.
