We get at least 20 guns a week for cleaning.Suckers.

While I totally agree that every gun owner should at least know how to clean their firearm, at least lets give them 'some' credit that they realize that it requires cleaning.

The only reason why I could think of why they would take in a gun to be cleaned (other than pure ignorance) is fear of taking it apart and not being able to put it back together or not trusting that they reassembled it correctly so it doesn't blow up in their face next time firing it.

I like to clean my gun. I'm not sure why. One thing I enjoy doing, when I can arrange time to do it, is to listen to NRA news while cleaning my gun. Again, I don't know why I like doing that. I guess the simple things count.

Having never seen a handgun before April 2005 (they took our guns away) I found it a little daunting when first faced with cleaning my gun. I never had the benefit of family members being able to teach me at a young age. Luckily the internet and gun clubs are full of great guys willing to show a newbie like myself how its all done.
I take pride in keeping my guns cleaned and maintained, it reminds me of how lucky we are in this country to retain the right to keep them.

Anyway, my wife (a Texan gal) always leaves me to clean her guns. Filled with pride I could share this knowledge I offered to teach her all I knew. Her response bit me in the butt, she said "Honey, I may not know how to clean my gun, but I sure as heck know how to get it cleaned" at which point she placed her 9mm on the countertop in front of me. Dang I love that woman . . .

Of course, I use the professionals to clean my guns. I can't imagine why folks feel they are qualified to clean something as complicated, delicate, and potentially dangerous as a firearm. We're not talking about dusting off the armoire in your living room, we're talking about a device that must contain a powerful explosion and function properly when needed. No, this should be handled by people versed in such activities, this should only be performed by qualified, factory trained specialists. These technicians go through proper training, years of post-graduate vocational school, and continuing education courses to keep up with the most highly advanced lubricants, cleaners and techniques. Don't attempt to do this yourself, at home. The combination of potentially toxic fumes and non-cleanroom environment could be disastrous. If performed incorrectly, you weapons could fire inconsistantly, fully automatically, or even spontaniously. My cousin's sister's aunt's daughters cousin cleaned his guns himself one day and was involved in a fatal car wreck the very next day.......coincidence....I don't think so.

Now that we got that out of the way, I am totally kidding and do clean my own weapons.

That's funny. I've never heard of taking a gun to someone to have it cleaned. That's just dumb.

The shop down the street from me spends an amazing amount of time cleaning guns, to the point that if I am just hanging around up there, I will go ahead and pitch in, always amazes me....

I used to hate and fear taking down a gun to clean it. Now that I've been in the military for 6-1/2 years I've come very accustomed to tearing down weapons cleaning them, replacing parts, and doing simple maintenance on them and re-assembling them. Its not very hard, just depends on the weapon how long the disassembly/re-assembly takes. Some weapons are easier to take apart than others.

My unit armorer has been kind enough to show me a few things that help while cleaning, and also has been kind enough to help show me how to tear weapons down farther than most people normally do because 1. they don't know how, 2. in the case of the military, aren't authorized past 10 level maintenance, 3. are too lazy. If you tear a weapon down as far as possible once in a while and clean every piece, lubricate, and inspect for broken, bent, missing parts then you will ensure that weapon is ready to be used whether it be for protection or just for target practice. Plus the better you take care of you guns, the longer they will last and be trouble free. Its amazing the number of weapons that come into the arms room at work that are either 1. filthy, 2. half way cleaned, 3. won't function properly, etc.

I actually find it relaxing to clean weapons after use. Don't know why, but it relaxes me.
