The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is searching for an escaped inmate in Leon County. 46-year-old Gonzalo Lopez assaulted a correctional officer on a transport bus and then fled from the vehicle. TDCJ, OIG, and multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for the inmate near Highway 7 westbound in Leon County approximately 1.5 miles from Interestate 45. Lopez is serving a life sentence for capital murder out of Hidalgo County and attempted capital murder out of Webb County. If you spot Lopez, immediately contact 911 and do not approach him.

For media inquiries please contact Robert Hurst at 936-577-4934

A staging area is located at the Dairy Queen westbound on Highway 7.

It doesn't say how he escaped.

My understanding is that when transporting an inmate, especially one serving a life term for murder, is that the inmate is hand and leg cuffed to the seat or some kinda bar. And there should be at least 2 guards on the bus.

Like I said, big fail on the cuffs/leg irons.
    Several fail points probably.

    Strip search.

Proper cuff leg irons belly chain

    Search of the bus

    Supervision and close contact vigilance.

I have transported inmates in cars vans buses and a plane once. It's not a game and, like most phuck ups, there has to be multiple failures or conspiracy and prior planning to do something like this. An innate taking advantage of a situation is usually caught quickly in a situation like this.

Just sayin without knowing the facts/details.

Here is a box that prevents access to key holes and limits wrist movements

I prefer the higher security cuffs like this for transportation but they arent cheap and if you lose the key.... so they were rarely used. Sad. May be different today. The were like 500 bucks a set back in the 90s. I think they are half that now. Set being leg irons and belly chain.
