Dallas Police said two responding officers were met with gunfire from a high-powered rifle. Shots fired by the suspect hit the hood and windshield of the police cruiser. One officer was struck in the lower body during the attack and the other officer returned fire.
The injured police officer was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery at about 1:00 a.m., while his injuries were severe, they were not thought to be life-threatening.
"We were traveling north on Prairie Creek, we was [sic] about 10 yards from the entry way of the apartment complex when we heard artillery go off. It was about 5 or 6 shots go off, and first thing that come to mind I asked my wife and son to get down in the backseat, so just we went ahead and mashed on the gas and went through the light and made a u-turn and came back," said apartment resident Terrance Perkins. "We couldn't see anything but the cop car sitting there, and the cop car, has a large hole in the windshield."
