Texas is big! 17 hour drive from furthest southern border to most northern border and 12 hours from most eastern border to western!

I would pick an area and try to do as much on that area otherwise you are going to waste all your time travelling. What area are you staying in, just around the base?

    Welcome to TGT.

We have multiple big cities that have many things to do. Hopefully a member in one of them will volunteer to escort you around. You won't be able to see even all of one big city in a week, much less the whole state.

Maybe if you tell us what you would like to do and see somebody can help.

Welcome and good luck (but I hope any entrant from Texas prevails ;))

Good comments already, I suggest doing a web search for "Texas festivals". I hope you're not expecting everyone to be riding horses, wearing a 10 gallon hat, with six shooters on both hips. We stopped that about 5 years ago.

We have multiple bug cities ...
Yup, skeeters are pretty bad year round :p

    Helotes!
I gotta put in a plug for San Antonio, birthplace of Texas Independence. We have the Alamo, Riverwalk, Mission Trail and the Hill Country; plus it's a big military town (four major bases).

We've been here for over ten years and still haven't see/done everything...

We had Danish security while I was with SFOR in Sarajevo back in 1998. I still remember how to say thank you ("Tusind tak"). Unfortunately, it's about all the Danish I know!

    Cheers! M2

Welcome aboard and please let us know what city you are primarily looking at staying in. As Yankee said above, the state is huge, but if you let us know what city you will be in, many here would be more then happy to get you started and even meet up with you to show you around their area themselves.

Also, would love to here about what equipment you are shooting in those sniper competitions. :)

This. San Antonio is the heart of Texas. I recommend the Menger Hotel where Teddy Roosevelt recruited Roughriders. It's literally across the street from the Alamo. If you don't stay there, stop into the bar. Also, Casa Rio on the Riverwalk. I'm sure there are better places for Mexican food, but the location alone is worth the trip.

I'll put in a plug for 6th street in Austin. Lots of bars and music at night bring many sweet young things, and I'd have to imagine a couple of gentleman with charming accents would do quite well in the "attention" getting department.

Close enough to San Antonio and New Braunfels to use as a base for nighttime activity. Although Oktoberfest will be going on in New Braunfels if you want to see an American version. Probably also a target rich environment, but a little older targets, and more couples. New Braunsfels area was settled by Germans in the 1840s so it's a weird little culture.

Fly into San Antonio, but I'd plan on at least a couple of nights on Sixth Street.

Welcome to Texas, a state, vast in size, and diverse in topography, climate and culture.
If you're coming to the Houston area, keep us posted here.
Houston, as are most urban cities in Texas, is not really representative of Texas.
Even though Austin falls in that category, it, and San Antonio, are far more representative of historical Texas.

That said, how many in your team?
We are used to putting up visiting bands and musicians from all over the world at our home, and showing them around the area.
We have folks coming from Denmark and Austria this month.
PM if you're going to be in this area.

Welcome!! Texas has, I think 7 distinct landscapes, and seeing each would mean 7 days in the car, with a little bit of time left over to look around. From the far northwest corner of the panhandle to Brownsville in the far southeast is right at 1600 KM. The other long length east to west is around 1400 KM.

Everyone has suggested some great things for you. Sixth Street in Austin is mostly night life, clubs and such. Nothing on Sixth Street to look at in the daytime. But the rest of Austin has the state Government buildings - the Texas Capitol is based on the US Capitol, of course just a shade bigger. Plenty to see in Austin. San Antonio is an excellent suggestion - of course there is the Alamo and several other chapels dating back to Texas independence. Lots of other landmarks, the River Walk, all good!

No one has suggested Gonzales, Refugio, Victoria and the final battlefield of Independence: San Jacinto. To my heart there lies the heart of Texas - from the Alamo follow Santa Anna's trail to San Jacinto through Goliad. San Jacinto is very near Houston with the Johnson Space Center there. That would fill a week very easily, with lovely landscape and plenty of history.

So depending on what your interests are, whether you are more interested in night life or museums or landscape or historical sites, give us an idea and we an help with itineraries, sights, you name it. The Hill Country (limestone hills, very pretty) is just to the west of San Antonio and Austin, so if it's landscapes you want to see, I'd start there.

There are gun stores literally everywhere. San Antonio, Houston and Dallas will have some of the larger ones, of course, being in the major cities. Austin tends to be a liberal island in the midst of a lot of conservative folk. But they too have gun stores. Ranges also exist everywhere. There are some very long-range locations, which some of our members will be more familiar than I. Let on you are snipers at one of those ranges, and i wager you'll have a friendly competition going in no time!

Gentlemen, thanks for your service in all the NATO engagements you've been involved - your help is greatly appreciated!

When out of towners ask me what to see in Texas, I try to pick things they won't see in their own state or country:

Spanish Missions, including the Alamo: http://www.missionsofsanantonio.org/

Painted Churches of Central Texas: http://www.klru.org/paintedchurches/

State Capitol Building, Austin: The art on the inside alone is worth the trip.

As others have said, Texas is huge. When you are in El Paso in far west Texas, you are closer to San Diego, California, than you are to Texarkana in far east Texas.
