I have always hunted with my Rem 700 in 30'06 I have hunted with it going on 40 yrs and now I want to use a different rifle .I would like to find a short (18") barreled bolt action in .243,308 or 6mm the one I had in mind is a Rem 600 Mohawk which was discontinued years ago. Remington came out with 660 and then it too was DC'd then the 673, this one has a butt ugly stock there is no appeal there to me to own one. I have also thought of using a lever action .
    Anyone here have any input?

My personal all-time favorite is the Remington Mdl 788 in .243. Flat-shootin', simple rifle that is one of the most accurate factory rifles I've ever shot.

Remington 700 - 30.06, that is what I have too... my dad's from 40 years ago. My sons just gave me a new scope for my birthday & it is simply amazing how far optics have come in the last 40 years... Might just try a bit of an upgrade. A lot cheaper than a new rifle... but then, then there is no excuse for a new rifle, right?!?!?
    Good luck in your quest!!

If I were buying one these days, I'd give a hard look at the Savage line, and would go 7mm-08, .243 or .308.

For long range flat shooting deer hunts I use The 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser
For my Nilgai and Elk hunting I use The 8mm Mauser
For my Blackbuck and smaller game I use The .243 Winchester

If I'm driving around the ranch the Model 94 Winchester 30-30 is the best to have in your pick up truck.
But, if I had to chose one it would be my 1962 Ted Williams .270win given to me by my dad. My very first rifle!

I have a NIB Winchester 94 AE 30-30 that's been in my safe for close to twenty years I may put a scope or red dot and hunt with that.
