So does the state mail you a PIN for checking the status of your license and if they do, how long after they've received your application does it take to get it?

I never got my PIN in the mail (that I saw), my packet had my license number on it (# L), which I emailed to chl@txdps.state.tx.us and they emailed back my PIN number to check status.

    Be sure to include:

    license number
    driver license number
    full name
    date of birth

    My order of events was:

    online application and paid $140
packet recieved in mail (2 weeks) with license number
    CHL course $99
    mailed complete package
emailed to request PIN for status (24hrs)

... In speaking with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), I am told that the CHL Bureau is about 15-30 days behind in processing original CHL applications and 10-15 days behind in processing CHL renewal applications. The standard 60-day processing time for both original and renewal CHL applications is now currently running at about 90-day processing time. This backlog is due to a 40% increase in applications since late 2007. To help remedy this backlog, the CHL Bureau has hired temporary employees and is working employees on overtime schedules ...

    Thank you,

    Success!

Simply amazing what a simple email does (Representative)

The DPS website changed to "Processing Application" today around 10:30 AM

Lee Williams from the DPS called me @ 10:00 AM today and informed me that my application was good and that it was currently at the manufacture being made and that it would be done in 7-10 days. He left his phone number so I could reach him directly and said he would keep me updated if anything changed.

He did mention something I never thought about though. He said once it gets back from the manufacture they have to check its quality, which made him leery to speculate on the 7-10 day time period.

Not bad. The statuts on the website is often behind. Even without the rep involved, you are still way under the 90 day window.

Eidt to add; I thought I had already posted to this thread, but the TSRA letter in the initial post is wrong. DPS has 90 days, not just 60, to process an intial app. AND, if they need more time there is a provision for them to notify you of that and when they expect to be completed.
