OK Diesels dont have a catalytic converter, they have a particulate filter. I dont know the year when these started to be required, but the truck uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid "DEF" or it doesn't.

    Welcome to TGT.

A vehicle safety inspection is required on all vehicles in Texas to operate on public roads. A vehicle emissions test and inspection is only required of some vehicles in certain counties in Texas, and is totally different inspection that is separate from a vehicle safety inspection. They are not the same.

Some older diesels had a catalytic converter.

    My '97 Powerstroke did.

Actually they do have catalytic converters. They also have particulate filter and SCR filters along with the good ol muffler. My 2014 has none of the filters and just the muffler. Harris county does emissions testing but diesels are exempt. Just a safety check. If you’re really worried about it, just find a inspection station that has a sign like this and you will be good.

No emissions testing on at least pre DEF diesel p/u’s. Just a safety inspection. My cat has been cut off my powerstroke for years. I live in Harris county they do emission test but on gassers.

Go to mom and pop inspection station or garage and you'll be on your way in no time. I've passed all of my slightly modded vehicles without issue.

No problem with modding your diesel pu in Texas, just don't go out west. Several RV groups posted they are enforcing the CAT/DPF filter rules. From what I read get caught without and they tow your truck to the nearest dealership to be returned to factory stock, at your cost (reported to be $4-5K). Meanwhile your rv is left on the side of the road. No iffies, andies, or butties. No thanks. Mine stays stock.
