Sorry if this is in the wrong forum...

I read an article on Fox News this morning about an EMP and how a million people would perish in the first hour or something like that.

Anybody know what causes random articles like this to pop up?

Yes it's reality, yes people should know, yes it's possible, but WHY on 4/21 would Fox publish an article about it?

    Anybody know?

Planes, Trains and Automobile wrecks should get that many easy. Emergency responders will be on foot for the most part, no pumpers Ambulances. Also no power at medical facilities. CYOA

You can only milk the usual stories for so long before you need to throw something else out.

Need to go back to wind up watches and vacuum tubes if you want to get by it.. Your 65 Chevy will still run no problem :) I remember when the first MiG 25 defected to Japan, the people that inspected it were amazed that the radar and radio systems were still vacuum tube systems, first laugh was that they were so behind in technology, second laugh was on us as they were much better prepared for military readiness after an EMP.

To build a garage sized Faraday cage would break the bank. You'd be better off starting with a small stand alone metal storage container. like a walk in closet size. Electrically bond all surfaces, then construct a fine mesh wire (preferably copper) 2nd skin around it. both the box and skin need to be earth grounded, NOT tied to water pipes or Electrical service ground. you are shielding against RF not plain electrical current. If you were a Ham Radio Operator, you'd be looking for what we call boat Anchors(tube) radios. Something that doesn't get pointed out is that IF we were to receive man made EMP burst, most likely there would be several. I'd go the route of back ups of vulnerable parts in the cage. Radios, small back-up generator, compasses, anything that runs solid state devices( almost everything now days).

DOD spent a lot of money figuring out just exactly what the damage would be in the event of an EMP. The conclusion was that it wouldn't damage near what people generally think it would. Then again, it's the government. They probably hired some contractors to do the research, who then spent the money on lavish vacations and paid the last $20 to a 3rd grader to do the "research".
