Up to now, I have it done at a small shop, but the cost to do so, produces a less sharp than new blade, but yes, better than trying to use a dull blade.

The economics of having it done is almost not worth it compared to buying new or learning to do it myself. Not something I've ever been interested in, until lately.

    So, what do you do?

Have it done or do it yourself?

If you do it yourself, what do think the best tool to do is?

The Stihl 2 in 1 Sharpener or ...?

    Thanks!

    Out here by the lake!
My buddy in Palestine has a cousin with a family farm thats been around. Last year we went in to the shop & I spotted a chain sharpening set up that was pretty old & complete that I wish I could have.

    Thanks all!

Once cool weather is back, I've 7 blades to sharpen.

I've been studying videos on the Stihl sharpener and reading reviews - looks like a winner, but Vaq., are you comparing the file against the Stihl sharpener? As in, you tried the Stihl, but prefer a proper size file?

    Thanks again!

    I've not tried the stihl.
Looks like it does the exact same thing with a guide included.

    Vaquero,

    Thanks for the reply.

    Very helpful!

I just spent a half hour working in the sun - I'm soaked like I've been hit by a Gulf squall...to heck with working outside while the sun fiercely shines - I'll wait til 7:15 or so from now on.

Used to have a little mom and pop small engine repair place a few miles from me that I'd take the chains to for sharpening. Think he charged me $6-$7 per chain and always did a great job. Seemed I could get 3-4 out of it before I tossed it. BUT they closed down a year or so ago so might have to look at these other options. Although I don't use my chainsaw as much as I used to so getting a new chain every year or two isn't that big a deal.

I've just never heard of "blades" in association with chain saws. I must have lived a sheltered life. :green:

    Vmax,

Wow, the Timberline sharpener is fantastic!

Looks like super high quality and is accordingly priced too, but from the video the chain is precisely sharpened.

    Good stuff!

    In the woods...
Been usin this stupid thing at work for 10 years and absolutely love it. Prison brings me their blades too and I can do one in about 5 minutes. Quick, easy, and for sure sharp. Never had to replace the stone (diamond?) blade either (yet)

I have one of these, also. It takes a time or two to get the hang of it. I also have a file to file down the "follower" - not sure what it's actually called...

I have owned it for 3 years
It's all you need to do a very precise job
Some sharpeners can remove too much metal. The teeth are sharp but it uses up the life of the chain.

I also file down the rakers occasionally to get better bite
If your rakers are too tall, your chain wont cut not matter how sharp it is.
