Cash gets things cheaper sometimes much cheaper.
    Cash can be descrete.
    People like cash.
I live just opposite of you. I have no credit cards only my bank card with a low limit.
Going on close to 30 years like this.

Wow. Brings back memories. The number of UT Austin girls who used to work the peep shows was just staggering back in the day.

I remember one time at a signing event at one of the adult book stores the staff were nervous because Austin PD had been really cracking down on them, coming up with any little thing to hassle 'em. I was there on a junket with production company promoters and we had a radio station broadcasting live. What happens? A pair of Austin's finest come walking in wearing riot gear trying to put on an intimidation show.

I greeted them so loudly the entire store could hear.

"Welcome, officers! It's so nice of you to drop by to support the event! If you need anything, just let me know! I'll be happy to take you to the head of the line and get you a couple of signed 8x10s! Hey, I know! Would you like to pose with her?"

Then I shouted across the store to the porn star signing autographs "Hey, you mind coming over and posing with a couple of Austin's finest? It's so nice to see such support for free speech from the law enforcement community, I think you should make a special effort to make them feel welcome!"

The cops glared at me, walked down one aisle, and walked right back out the door.

The manager of the store and all the counter workers shook my hand and some of them hugged me after the event. They'd never seen a single cop embarrassed out of the store before, much less two. They all said they were sure I was going to jail while it was happening.

On-topic part of this post - You had to pay cash for a signed picture or to pose with the actress. But maybe that doesn't apply because I was negotiating to the the officers a freebie... :)
A fine example of how many of life's tense moments can be resolved by a quick mind and a sense of humor!

Depends on how much you're carrying. A study published in 2012 said they could do it with a single 5 dollar bill from 3 cm. That is about an inch, but they were also using a much smaller detector than what big brother has.

This group presented it publicly in 2012. It's 2021. I bet it's been classified technology for 25 years.

EDIT FOR Mr Admin super duper moderator who couldn't just correct me
Anyone without layered RIFD blockers inside their wallet, passport pocket and trouser pockets where key fobs and/or money clips are placed is just NOT keeping abreast of current threats. I am 72 years old and those precautions are cheap and basic to security to everyone whether you travel or not.

Tried a new burger place the other day. They do not take cash at all. Sign on the door said they will close for one day next week to give the staff a break. Not enough customers in there to stress their staff in my opinion.

The 'no cash' deal probably does not hurt their business, no doubt saves them on labor and managing the cash.

I use cash only for the Senior Center lunch program, a $3/meal donation into a drop box. I haven't carried much cash ever because I tend to spend it on candy bars and cokes and such.

Started using a debit card a long time ago. The wife hates it, but since she got dementia it really doesn't matter that since she no longer shops, nor keeps the checkbook register up. Debit cards are just easier than checks and I don't have to make any efforts to have cash on hand.

Credit cards.... uh, no. Es Verboten!! Way too easy to overspend. Only time I use one is for online purchases, since debit card is no bueno online. I generally try to pay it off every month.

Older thread but since it was bumped I will chime in with what works for me.

I rarely have cash on me and never use my debit card except to get cash or at Spec's where they give a 5% discount. I use my credit card for everything I can and reap a nice little reward every year. I also haven't paid a penny in credit card interest in probably a decade.

I budget and track every single cent that I spend. There are many ways to do this such as the envelope system. I use a program and application called YNAB - You Need a Budget.

It's a rules based system for giving every dollar a job. It takes some discipline but it is well worth it for me. I paid off my student loan early, do not accrue new debt thoughtlessly and have substantially increased my net worth by being cognizant of where my money is going.

I used to have horrible budgeting and spending habits and ran my credit card up a couple of times before I finally got disciplined. Leaning into this system has really changed things for me. It's not for everyone and there are many different ways to do it but this is what has worked for me.

There’s two separate things going on here. First is knowing where every single dollar goes. That’s a backwards look…look back at May. For every dollar spent, track it back to what it was spent on.

Spot on. I maintain a spreadsheet with my projected budget which is my strategy. What I describe above is my tactical application of that strategy. They have to work together.

Some physical cash, most debit, or PP, or Zelle for family. If you don’t have any cash you can be caught without any connectivity and you’re hosed.

It happens, you don’t know what service your ISP uses, and it has happened that all major server farms have gone down at the same time. Unless you’re in the industry, you might never know what happened.

And then there is working so much you don’t have time to spend it!

Also do whatever you can not to pay someone to do for you! Things like cutting your own hair and doing your own yard work add up big time in a year.

Buying a home sure beats renting. Home ownership does not come cheaply, but if done right pays off big time!
Haha self proficiency is becoming a thing of the past. Nobody except me and one or two others on my street cut their grass anymore, even though they have kids that could likely do so. And car maintenance? Pft.. not around here. I don’t even see anyone washing their own cars any more

This blows me away and I’ve noticed it also. I think I’m the only one on my street that cuts his own grass. I had a yard guy for a while and he did a terrible job so I fired him post haste.

I’m not the handiest person in the world but I can fix basic stuff. Things that a plumber would charge a couple hundred bucks for. I’m constantly seeing people post in our neighborhood groups not even knowing how to handle basic stuff. Some folks older than me. I know we all have to start somewhere but yikes….

For most of my life I got along without a credit card. It is difficult to do accomplish things like renting a car or ordering items on the internet without a card. I wrote checks for my last truck and car. It would have been difficult and dangerous to carry those amounts of cash. The use of credit cards and checks has also made it necessary to frequently monitor those accounts. More than once I've caught improper charges made to an account and the bank was quick to prevent a loss. If one isn't responsible with cash or cards, each will allow problems.

I can't stand yard work. I think it's a massive waste of time, and caring what it looks like is banal vanity. A garden on the other hand is something worth spending time on.

I pay my yard guy that keeps the city and neighbors off my back in cash
