As I mentioned before, the hunting gods smiled on me and I was drawn for a rifle hunt in Gus Engling WMA.
Went to orientation Saturday and did some scouting.

Here is base camp for the rest of the week:

We can tag 3 deer (2x doe and 1x buck) and unlimited hogs.
I came armed with the Model 70, Stag Arms AR with bushnell RDS, and a Judge.
My goal is to take out a hog with the Judge to prove all of the haters wrong.
I plan frequent updates with pictures this week. Hopefully you'll see an awesome buck and a stack of hogs!

    No luck this morning.
Saw the flash of a whitetail as she ran awat - no clear shot.
I went back to the tent for a lunch break, and scored a camping shelter.

I was singing the theme song to the Jefferson's when moving in.

Cell phone reception at my new camp location stinks.
    No deer yesterday.
I got set up this morning where I saw that doe yesterday.
Lots of shooting all around this morning- 10-12 total. Maybe they will push some deer my way if my doe doesn't make an appearance.

    Edit to fix autocrat.

Ok. No luck this morning - that same doe was ahead of me, going down a spur towards the creek. Again, she knew I was coming.
I have developed an improvement plan for myself:
    1) Use scouted locations, and not rely on stalking as much. I have a location for the above deer, and have planned a couple of other locations this morning. All marked with trails in so I can find my way in at 0dark:30.
    2) Improve my scent. I can smell myself, and maybe the deer can too. I ran into Athens to wash my gear, and even got some of the scent free soap with autumn scented laundry sheets. I also picked up some scent free underarm deodorant.
I'll be back behind the gun tonight, scent free, with a 100 yard view to a crossing area coming up from a creek. I'll put the scope back on my rifle, and even use a bipod.

Any cedars or other odorous brush around?
I put cedar branches in a plastic bag with my hunting clothes.
I permeates the fabric and helps mask your scent.

    Cedar would have been cheaper.
I supported the American economy by buying this:

It's amazing how quick I am to buy a solution versus thinking my way through it and using what the Almighty has already given.

    No deer tonight.
Seemed like a good position overlooking an active convergence of trails, but no deer.
    We'll see what tomorrow brings.
