Maybe THIS will be the breach that finally clues someone into the fact a Social Security Number and person's name is NOT adequate to verify identity. Doubt it, easier to just write down the loss and let people take care of the fallout from the identity theft problems.

^^^ way more cost effective, costs are paid by consumers as part of the APR companies charge

Even cops generally treat identity theft as a civil issue, not criminal...anyone who's been the victim of identity theft will vouch for that.

I wouldn't be holding your breath on that one. Until identity theft begins to harm the banks in some tangible way, absolutely nothing going happen. They write off fake $$ while individuals and merchants eat the the true costs. Start fining banks who have breached or manage to issue credit to fake people and watch the whirlwind of cyber security improvements and demand for DNA at a branch before you get your Best Buy CC.

Don't worry they will buy it back before it starts back up lol.

So far when a breech happens they improve security and the stock ends up higher than it was before the breech.

I've already got free lifetime credit and personal information reporting from the government due to a massive leak on their part years ago with those of us who had security clearances. Now I'm at risk with this yet again. People need to start losing their jobs and being held accountable in the court of law for this kind of stuff. Luckily, I track my stuff daily so I will know if something has been done to me information if it was used through most normal means.

So you want to fine an organization for being attacked by criminals?

    I show as being effected.

What sucks is that pretty much anyone who has ever applied for any kind of credit will have had their info sent to equifax.

All I got was an offer to sign up for the program and nothing that said I was in fact affected.
Did you or anyone else get something that said they were in fact compromised ?

I believe they are offering the service to everyone, breeched or not.

Credit monitoring is pretty much worthless, just like the commercials that mock it...

What should be offered is a credit lock/freeze, the capability to stop any inquiries to your credit unless you allow it. Several companies offer it, but it is fee-based. Still, it should be mandatory for companies that lose the PII of people to provide it to the "victims."
