On this day..35 Years ago I was a Security Police stationed at Dyess AFB and was a 1st responder on a terrible crash of a KC-135 refueling tanker that took off bound for Hickam ABF Hawaii.

19 dead and most were retirees taking a HOP flight.
The fire was Hell on earth.

One of the hardest days of my life.

I didn't catch the news but I'm betting nobody mentioned it.

I remember. We were ankle deep in jet fuel and fire foam recovering the dead.

There is a bond with all of us that were there that day that we still talk about at the squadron reunions.

It was like a sunrise at noon, so bright, then the smoke column blocked out the sunlight.
I was probably 10 miles away and didn't hear or feel anything.
I just remember the bright light from the east. Then, dark.
It was lunch time and I didn't know what happened until supper and the evening news.

I didn’t see anything on KTAB news.

ETA; I can’t stand watching the others.
Nobody around anymore at the TV station that was there that day except maybe one guy.
All 20 somethings there now weren't even born yet

I'm sure they had some real important story though about someone selling girlscout cookies or something else majorly important
