Looks like the FDA is moving to ban percocet and vicodin as prescribed pain medications due to the high content of acetaminophen.

Their reasoning? Less than 50 deaths a year occur from it's ABUSE.

So for the millions of people it was prescribed to and used properly by, they now have to possibly seek another pain medication because of people that are addicted to the substance, and / or use it recreationally as a method of getting high.

Yet another instance of the nanny state.

I would venture a guess that the death's might have been caused by the vocodin or percocet, not the acetaminophen cause that death is a wee bit slower.

Liver failure is the cause of death. I'd like to know how many of those were in conjunction with alcohol usage, or even suicides.

there is still advil and aspirin to take the edge off. i think it is dumb because only does it fail the liver if you take it often, so it then makes me wonder why people arent enlightened about switching painkillers every couple of hours?

I understand that hydrocodone works better when mixed with acetaminophen, but the drug companies could just remove the acetaminophen from the mix & produce the drugs that way....dunno.

    Asprin is salicylic acid.

Tylenol is acetaminophen, and lots of people OD on it every year.

    Advil/Aleve is ibuprophen (sp?)

    These are three different drugs

I believe that there are at least a couple of drugs than contain only the active ingredient in Vicodine. (I think hydrocodine, but don't quote me. I haven't started pharmocology yet).

I don't see anything incredibly wrong with just telling people to take two different pills, but I can see higher problems of compliance.

I agree. The over the counter combo pills are a huge rip-off. I buy the large count, generic varieties of the individual components at Sams. When I have a headache with runny nose, I take a couple of acetaminophen and a couple of generic antihistamines. Total cost for both 100 pill bottles, about $8. Cost of 20 Tylenol Allergy-Sinus, 8 or 9 bucks. Buying the combo pills never made any sense to me when they were 5x or 10x the cost of the generic components.
