"It's very enticing if you go to somebody whose working at a fast food restaurant and say, 'Hey, you can make $500 a day, go buy me 10 guns at 10 different dealers,'" said Webb.

I believe all these Gun Laws are too strict to begin with.

But the FFL's seem to be the only ones suffering in this story since they had to endure the actual investigation. They are technically agents of the Feds so they know the drill.

One thing to keep in mind is that most guns are illegal in the hands of private citizens in Mexico. As a result, it takes a good 30 minutes to an hour to find one. ANYONE that thinks they're safer because guns are illegal should take a look at what's gone in in Mexico over the past 30 years - not just the drug cartels, but the corruption and outright trampling of the general population.
I stopped travelling on business in Mexico about 20 years ago - nowadays, if someone wants me down there bad enough, they prepay: R&K insurance; Irrevocable Letter of Credit in my favor at MY bank for any vehicle, tools, etc that I'll have with me; all labor/travel/expenses. They also agree to have someone either meet me at the border or the airport - at least one escort to be legally (by Mexico's standards) armed at ALL times and with me while in-country. Needless to say, that runs off 99% of the folks - which is fine with me. The 1% that DO comply ensure that I don't run into any problems - which is the main purpose!
Folks that travel ANYWHERE in Mexico on vacation do so at their (GREAT, IMO) peril - there's NOTHING down there that I want/need any more. It's a shame, because it's a beautiful country with some wonderful folks - but their government sux.

I have taken several week-or-longer trips into Mexico in the past. There are some very fine people down there, but I won't even consider going to the border towns any longer.

Back on subject...

The "crack down" was more of an excuse to swamp the Houston area with ATF boys and girls.

It did do a little good, one of my favorite shops, who will remain nameless, had an error in some paperwork.

The agent did not cite them if they could resolve it within 1 hour.

The error was a transposed serial number on the logs.

I will explain the logs - yes multiple ones.

I purchased a shotgun, did the 4413 then handed it right back to them and asked them to do some repairs on it.

4413 SN did not match the smiths paperwork although the rest did.

I had picked up the shotgun 3 days prior to the agent doing the audit.

The shop called me asking me to validate the SN with what they had on record.
I just happen to be at home so I pulled it out and while on the phone and verified its SN.

So, the "Crack Down", in this case and under the good judgment of the agent solved a potential fine against the shop.
