    Your federal government at work…

Eyewitnesses say that this was NOT surplus ice, but ice that FEMA couldn’t figure out how to distribute. The number of trucks moved to the AFB in Seguin was reportedly more like 500 (as in the 500 ice trucks staged at reliant stadium for 5 days while FEMA struggled to find its ass with both hands and a roadmap.) They also report that the trucks were moved to the federal facility, guarded by armed guards, and the truck drivers were threatened with their jobs if they talked to the press. (A lot of good THAT did!)

People! When you vote in November, please keep in mind that this inept federal government is the SAME one that nearly half of Americans trust to run their health care system. This is the same incompetent government that is bailing out super rich bankers to the tune of nearly TWO TRILLION DOLLARS! (That’s nearly $7,000 for every man, woman and child in the U.S.!) This is the same bungling government that Maxine Waters and other Democrats want to run our American oil companies. Both Obama and McCain are in bed with the major bankers (utterly disgusting!), but at least McCain isn’t pushing for ‘universal health care’ and socializing the oil companies.

When is America going to learn that government is not the solution; it’s the PROBLEM!?!?!

FEMA says ice was no longer needed on Gulf Coast

SEGUIN -- Thousands of pallets of ice, originally dispatched for areas ravaged by Hurricane Ike, melted in the sun today on a runway at Randolph Auxiliary Air Field here, with more trucks lining up to unload more ice.

But it's not indicative of poor planning by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a spokesman said. In fact, it's just the opposite, evidence that FEMA was well prepared for Ike.

"That ice is surplus ice from the original requests from state, county and local authorities before the scope of the hurricane was known," said FEMA spokesman Richard Scorza. "We try to anticipate the needs for various commodities. The good news is it addressed the immediate needs of the population and there are no shortages."

Scorza said FEMA officials made aggressive efforts to place the surplus ice with other organizations, from churches to fish markets, but had only two takers, a church in Webster and an organization in Kentucky.
He said the agency decided to unload the ice and let it melt because it would be more expensive to keep it frozen indefinitely to fill some unknown future need. Scorza did not know how many trucks or how much ice was headed for Seguin, but said if any areas on the coast needed more ice, FEMA could supply it immediately.

"Our indications are that the ice they have on hand is sufficient for their needs," he said of coastal cities. "Better to have too much than not enough. This is a product of prudent planning. You don't want to be in a position where you underestimated your need."

The pallets of ice covered hundreds of square yards, and a continuous line of trucks were arriving at midday to unload more.
FEMA officials and security personnel at the airfield, an annex of San Antonio's Randolph AFB, refused to allow reporters onto the property, and initially objected to a reporter standing on a public road near the fence to try to interview truckers inside the fence.

When some truckers consented to an interview, a man wearing a FEMA shirt arrived on a golf cart within moments and threatened to have the truckers fired.

"This conversation is over," he told the truckers. "Or you guys will not be here any longer."

A security guard at the gate said the truckers had all signed an agreement not to speak to news media.

One trucker, contacted by phone, agreed to speak if his name was not published.

He said he picked up his 40,000-pound load of ice in Maryland last Wednesday and arrived in Houston near midnight Saturday, where he sat until he was sent to Seguin today to have the ice unloaded.

He said he was frustrated and upset at the turn of events, estimating the cost of the ice and his trip to be at least $12,000. He said he had seen at least 125 other trucks at the facility unloading.

Its not looking good for McCain IMO...every late night show and morning show has bashed Republicans and blaming the economy problem on them. McCain is being ridiculed for postponing appearances, etc. in light of Pres. Bush's address to the nation. I think there's some doubt among voters that McCain can get the job done unfortunately. Of course Obama would never let that happen and will bring "change"...riiiiight.

Ice is cheap. It probably indeed would be more expensive to store it.

    Let's see... $12,000 x 500 trucks = $6,000,000

    You're right! Chicken feed!

There was no shortage of people needing ice, and ANYONE with a shred of common sense could have figured a way to get this ice to those who needed it. Bill White was effective and instrumental in redirecting and focusing some of these dunderheads. Maybe we should put in charge of FEMA.

The fact that FEMA carried it all the way to Seguin and threatened the drivers with their jobs if they talked to the media doesn't raise a red flag with you?

    I agree with DoubleAction.

And they can point fingers and blame Bush or McCain or the Rep. party or whoever they want to, and they will because people will watch and listen like sheep and believe them.

The fact is, FEMA, is an absolute joke. They panic and freak every time something happens like this and internally they run around like idiots instead of implementing a plan. I think they're so disconnected from those they should be serving and spend most of their brain power trying to make sure they don't expose the stupid chit they know they're going to do that will waist millions.

well when you put all together like that, it makes perfect sense! My apologies, sir. I agree in the fact they there are ways of making use of that surplus. FEMA is worthless IMO

Duh. Take ice machines, generators plastic bags and water. The bankers are going to get 2-5trillion taxpayer dollars and I bet it melts too.

It already did. We're just now finding out about it. Whenever we hear of something bad going on in government, they've already known it for quite a while. It's just gotten so big, they can no longer contain it.
