Just renewed my DL, noticed that next January I will need a new CHL too.
How soon should I start the process?
Do I need to return where I went before, or will any instructor do?
    Any information is appreciated

DPS will send you a renewal notice 90 days before your license expires. You can take the renewal class anywhere.

DPS will send you a renewal notice 6 months out. Any instructor will do. Be sure DPS has your current address so you receive the notice.

Like the man said, 6 months before the expiration date. Don't procrastinate. Get your class scheduled and get your paperwork in the mail. DPS's turnaround is pretty good these days, but why take chances?

I had to renew last summer, so I started the process in March. This was back when it took forever to get the plastic, thanks to the Obama run on all things guns ... took 75 days to get the card, well in advance of the July deadline. If the turn time is now a month, I'd give it two months to be safe.
