I passed on a "pretty good deal" SCAR 17S this last weekend.

I'm having "Non-buyer's remorse" if there is such a psych entity.
    I wish I'd bought it.

    Any actual experience here?

    I keep reading reviews.
Low recoil impulse. Great battle-trigger. Utter reliability. Light weight. Future collectable.
And on and on and on.

FN SCARs are easy to find. Never cheap.

I have more .308/7.62s that I need already.

    I WANT one.

    Any actual personal advice here?
    SCAR 5.56 advisors.....feel free to offer 0.02.

The great recoil impulse is thanks mostly to the brake. Magazines are expensive, and lowers that accept common mags aren't cheap

    Reciprocating CH sucks

Can eat some optics, but i don't think its as much of a problem as it used to be

Biggest weak point is the stock assembly. You can get a steel latch to replace the polymer, but iirc FN has stated the factory part is polymer to prevent the gun from beating itself up too much.

The 5.56 lacks any special feature to put it ahead of even mid range AR15's, or other options like the ARX, cz bren, Tavor, AUG, or even the ACR, but thats stretching it

The .308 is more attractive as there really isn't much modern competition, really an AR10 is the only alternative, but will generally be heavier.

    Hmmmmm....
Must me a pretty uncommonly owned battle rifle given paucity of responses.

    Great muzzle break helps recoil?
I wonder how it does suppressed.
If I can't shoot suppressed I loose interest.

Can't think why it's hard on optics.

    I want one.
I'm a typical civilian shooter. Couple hundred rounds a year is tops.
I figure military shoots many thousands.
Few of us would ever wear one significantly.

    To put in in perspective....
Would I trade my vintage HK91 or Belgian FN FAL for a SCAR17? No way.

For the right price I'll have one.
Guy walking gun show asked 2,600.
    Turned down my 2.2K offer.
    Que sera sera.

I can't speak to suppressed use, but as far as optics go, most are able to handle the SCAR, but due to a wide variety of factors (bolt unlock rate, carrier rate travel, reciprocal weight, etc) all play a hand in killing optics. Its no secret SCARS can kil an optic.

As for durability, it doesn't take thousands of rounds. I know for sure of a .308 SCAR that developed cracks after about 100 rounds.

Unless you really want a lightweight .308, you'd be much better off with an AR10

SCAR 17 is pretty bad ass—wish I had bought mine sooner. Will shoot circles around your HK91 and FAL. Was engineered to shoot suppressed. Use a quality optic that’s not on a cantilever mount and you should be good to go.

Most fun you will ever have. You feel like you are armed with substantial weapon. I have the FDE model but no two parts are the same shade.

It operated fine with a suppressor. Then I read my suppressors manual and it specifically mentions not to use it on a SCAR 17. I never put it back on. Both items were too expensive to figure out why it was a problem.

The muzzle brake is pretty amazing. I ended putting the same model on several rifles with excellent results.

I had one in my posession for a little while. Pretty underwhelming to me. Didn't fill a role that other rifles I own did better. I sold it with no regrets.

Field stripped a used SCAR in a shop today.

Nothing in it looked like it should be more expensive to manufacture that an AR10!

    WTF?

What suppressor and do you have a link to the manual on line?

I would think that a suppressor, out on the end of a barrel, would find the rifle to which is emirates to be of no consequence!

Similarly, the SCAR-H designed from its inception to be full auto and suppressible should be unfazed by a back pressure increase.

Available for the first time to the civilian market, the military chosen Mk13-SD™ is an ultra-light-weight, fast-attach, high performance sound and flash suppressor for bolt action rifles chambered in 7.62mm NATO and .300 Winchester Magnum. The Grade 5 Titanium monolithic baffle core and Grade 9 Titanium tube give the Mk13-SD™ an improbable weight of 13.9 ounces and the durability to withstand the pressures and temperatures found at the muzzle of .300 Winchester Magnum rifles. Despite its small size and light-weight, the Mk13-SD™ delivers greater sound reduction and accuracy than any similarly sized competing models.

    Did not doubt you.

    Still wonder why?
Ok for, it seems, any 300 Win Mag.
Not OK for .308/7.62 Ruger or SCAR.

The SCAR does have a conical "shoulder" and that is a rather long suppressor.
I wonder if they have had baffle strikes secondary to non-concentricity ??

I suppose some things are just intrinsically unknowable to human minds.

    Thanks though.

My guess for the incompatibility is the fact that suppressor is all titanium, and unable to dissipate the heat of rapid fire that a SCAR is capable of.

It was designed for SOCOM to be a sniper rifle suppressor, which would have a much lower rate of fire.

I have one but I don't shoot it nearly as much as I should. But I do love it. Kinda like how some people are about the HK556, it's expensive but if you love it you love it. I consider every once in a while selling it to fund my 911 bits and track weekends, however I know I'd miss it instantly!
