I was once an 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander. Those things were fun as shit.

I was with the 81s in 'Nam as a Marine. Always on patrol and operations and being the new guy had to hump part of the base plate along with the usual 7 canteens, 400 rounds of M-16, poncho and pack of C-Rats and 3 rounds of 81mm. They were not as big as your pics for sure.
